7 Days Rwanda gorilla safari - Detailed itinerary
Day 1: Transfer to Nyungwe National park
A drive to Nyungwe Forest, including a visit to Nyanza King's palace for a cultural experience, Butare national museum and Murambi genocide museum is quite rewarding. This journey, if the mentioned sites are visited, would take approximately 6 to 8 hours to get to Nyungwe. Overnight stay at One & Only Nyungwe House or Nyungwe Top View Lodge
Day 2: Chimpanzee tracking and afternoon canopy walk
At 5:00 am transfer to Kyamudongo forest for briefing and embark on a chimpanzee tracking adventure. Tourists are free to enjoy the presence of the chimps for an hour before exiting the forest. Return to the lodge where you stayed the night before.
Day 3: Transfer to Volcanoes hotel
In the morning, you will transfer to Volcanoes NP with en route mini stops for photography. Overnight stay at Muhabura hotel (budget)/ Davinci lodge (deluxe)/ Tiloreza Volcanoes eco lodge / Five volcanoes hotel (luxury). FB
Day 4. Gorilla tracking and afternoon cultural walk
On this day, a packed lunch may be necessary as one can not precisely determine how long it will take to conclude the gorilla tracking experience. Upon encounter with the gorillas, the maximum time allowed to stay in their presence is just an hour. This gives them chance to freely roam the wilderness for food.
The afternoon could be utilized for a cultural trip to Iby'wachu village or a nature walk to the twin lakes - Ruhondo and Bulera. Dinner and overnight Muhabura hotel (budget)/ Davinci lodge (deluxe)/ Tiloreza Volcanoes eco lodge / Five volcanoes hotel (luxury). FB
Day 5. Golden monkey tracking, transfer back to Kigali
This day is for golden monkey tracking. On return, transfer back to Kigali. Overnight at Kigali Serena hotel (luxury)/ Five to Five hotel (deluxe). BB
Day 6.Transfer to Akagera NP and boat cruise
In the morning, you will be transferred to Akagera National park, arriving
early enough for a short game drive around the park. This is the only savannah park in Rwanda and with the recent introduction of lions and Rhinos, the park now boasts of the big 5 mammals. In the afternoon, take a boat cruise on Lake Ihema. Expect to see hippos, crocodiles and some water birds. Dinner and overnight at Ruzizi Tented lodge (luxury)/ Akagera Game lodge (deluxe). FB
Day 7: Game drive and transfer back to Kigali
At 6:00 am, go for a game drive in the northern sector of the park anticipating to see a variety of wildlife species including antelopes, zebras as well as some cat species if you are lucky. In the afternoon, you will exit the park and drive back to Kigali for drop off at your hotel or airport.

Volcanoes National park is located in North Western Rwanda and is home to the highest number of mountain gorillas in the Virunga Conservation Area. The park shelters over 350 gorillas habituated into 10 gorilla families (Agashya, Umubano, Karisimbi, Susa A, Sabyinyo, Hirwa, Pablo, Amahoro, Kwitonda, Ugenda and Bwenge. Volcanoes National Park is famous for its luxury gorilla tours given the high cost of gorilla permits compared to other gorillas parks in Uganda and the Democratic Republic of Congo.
With the varying altitude ranging between 1,900 to 3,000 Nyungwe Forest National Park exudes beauty found nowhere else in Rwanda. 1068 plant species have been recorded including 21 being endemics, e.g. Talenna Rwandensis and 140 orchid species. It is a birder's paradise with over 300 bird species, almost 30 of which are Albertine Rift Endemics; 13 species, according to IUCN, are endangered or threatened including rarities such as the Rwenzori turaco and Grauer’s swamp-warbler. Again IUCN has recorded 96 mammal species of which 63 are rodents and bats. 16 mammal species of these, are endemic and 11 species classified as threatened. The park also boasts of 30 species of amphibians and reptiles; and at least 120 butterfly species
